Macs are great computers. They’re powerful, fast, and reliable. But they also make great targets for hackers. Hackers love Apple products because they’re so secure.
Introduction Transition and thesis: Unfortunately, most people aren’t aware of how vulnerable their Macs are.
Many people don’t even realize that their Macs are hacked daily. Hackers can access your personal information, steal your identity, and even spy on you.
If you care about your privacy, you should protect yourself with a VPN. A Virtual Private Network allows you to connect to the internet securely from anywhere in the world.
It encrypts your data before sending it over the network, making it impossible for anyone else to intercept it.
We have tested dozens of VPN services and reviewed them all. The top VPNs for macOS work well and provide excellent security.
Best VPN for Mac for Maximum Security
NordVPN – Overall Best VPN for Mac
NordVPN is overall the best VPN for Mac users on the market. It’s a reliable and affordable option with features that make it a great choice for Mac users.
NordVPN offers strong security and privacy protection with robust encryption and a strict no-logging policy.
It also has a user-friendly interface and plenty of servers to choose from. In addition, NordVPN can unblock streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, making it a great all-around VPN for Mac users.
NordVPN is a great option for those looking for something reliable and trustworthy. This VPN provider offers unlimited bandwidth and servers in over 60 countries worldwide.
The app itself is very easy to use. You just need to enter your email address and choose iOS or Android.
After that, you’ll need to select a payment method and pick a plan. Once you’ve done that, you’re good to go. You can always change your settings later on, too.
There are plenty of features included in the app. First off, you can easily set up multiple connections. If you like, you can even add custom locations. Then, there’s the privacy policy link. You can read about what information they collect and how they store it.
The application interface is pretty straightforward. When you open the app, you’ll see a list of servers. On the left side, you’ll find a menu that lets you pick a location, type of encryption, and whether or not you’d like to reconnect automatically.
You can also view the status of each connection, along with the number of active sessions. You can also check out the logs, which show you exactly what data was sent and received during the session.
One of the coolest things about this app is the fact that it includes a kill switch. This allows you to shut down your entire connection if someone tries to hack into your network.
The threat protection function also keeps you safe from cybercriminals. It does this by keeping you protected from malware.
When you’re online, you’ll see a red shield icon next to your name in the bottom left corner of your browser window. If you ever notice anything suspicious, click the button to block the site.
In addition, there’s a built-in firewall. It protects against malicious sites and software. Also, you can block ads and trackers.
Another thing to keep in mind is that NordVPN uses AES 256-bit encryption. This is considered the strongest form of encryption out there. However, some VPN companies use weaker forms of encryption. Therefore, make sure you know what type of security you’re getting.
As mentioned earlier, there are two versions of NordVPN: the one you can find on their website and the one you can download directly from the Apple App Store. Both offer similar features, but the latter version allows you to use the app on multiple devices simultaneously.
SurfShark – Best Budget VPN for Mac
Surfshark is one of the best VPNs for mac users. They offer unlimited bandwidth, and their servers are fast enough for gaming.
With over 500 million devices supported, Surfshark is compatible with almost every device. And, since it doesn’t log your activity, it’s easy to keep your identity safe.
Surfshark is one of the few VPN providers offering military-grade encryption and a kill switch. They also supportWireGuard and IKEV2 tunneling protocols – great options to secure your internet traffic. But what makes Surfshark stand out is how fast it is.
The service uses AES 256-bit encryption. This makes sure that your data stays secure while traveling internationally. It also supports OpenVPN 2.0 and LZO compression.
OpenVPN 2.0 protocol allows you to connect to multiple networks simultaneously.LZO compression reduces traffic by compressing files before sending them across the network.
In addition to being able to encrypt your internet traffic, Surfshark provides a kill switch feature. This prevents your IP address from leaking while you’re online and lets you disconnect without losing your progress.
If you want to make sure you don’t lose your connection, Surfshark gives you the option to reconnect automatically.
They also offer unlimited bandwidth, allowing you to stream without interruption. And unlike many other VPN services, SurfShark doesn’t log your activity, making it safe for browsing and anonymous.
You can use it with torrent clients to hide your downloads, and the service has a strict zero-logging policy to keep your browsing activity safe.
Their upload and download speed tests also put most of the competition in their place.
Finally, Surfshark protects your data even beyond your internet connection.
If your personal information leaks, you can set up live data breach alerts to monitor your email, ID, and credit card info.
What sets Surfshark apart is its support team. They are always willing to help customers with questions and issues. They respond within 24 hours and provide detailed instructions on how to fix things yourself. And they give you plenty of time to try before buying.
ExpressVPN – Best Mac VPN for Speed and Security
ExpressVPN is extremely simple, with lightning-fast connections and many countries to choose from. If you’re looking for the best mac VPN provider that offers great value for money, ExpressVPN is worth checking out.
It’s also got one of the widest networks, with over 3,300 servers in 94 countries. And since ExpressVPN offers unlimited bandwidth, you’ll never run into throttling issues again.
The main reason why we think ExpressVPN deserves our Editor’s Choice award is that it offers split tunneling functionality. This allows you to select which applications are allowed to access the internet via ExpressVPN’s network while keeping everything else safe and secure.
For example, if you’re trying to watch a video while browsing Facebook, you can do that without worrying about accidentally leaking sensitive information.
You can even block certain sites entirely if needed. Another great thing about ExpressVPN is how well it supports Windows and Linux clients. There are no issues connecting to servers on either operating system. You can also pay monthly or yearly plans depending on your needs.
With ExpressVPN, you don’t need to worry about whether or not your ISP is logging your data or throttling bandwidth. You can just focus on enjoying your favorite movies, TV shows, and music without worrying about being tracked online.
The app also offers great flexibility with how you connect to the internet. You can select whether you want to keep your IP address hidden or not, whether you want to use a static IP address, and whether you wish to use DNS. There are also options to allow or disallow certain applications access to the VPN connection.
You can also rest assured knowing that ExpressVPN keeps no logs of your activity. As such, there is nothing to hide behind, and you’ll never have to worry about accidentally leaking information.
ExpressVPN’s Lightway technology provides some of the fastest speeds we’ve ever experienced while using a VPN. Plus, because ExpressVPN uses OpenVPN protocol, you can connect to servers across multiple protocols such as PPTP and L2TP/IPSec.
Regarding security, ExpressVPN uses AES 256-bit encryption and SHA256 hashing algorithms to secure data transfer. All traffic goes through dedicated IP addresses, and no logs are stored. Your account information is protected via 128-bit SSL certificates.
The network coverage includes most major cities worldwide, including North America, Asia, Australia, Europe, South Africa, the Middle East, and much more. If you’re looking for a VPN that covers most of the globe, ExpressVPN is worth checking out.
FastestVPN – Best Mac VPN for Speed
FastestVPN app for Mac has many features like a kill switch, DNS leak protection, and more. One of those features is protocol. The app has three protocols available: OpenVPN, L2TP/IPsec, and IPSec.
They all work equally well with Mac OS X operating system. But what is the difference between each of them? What is the best protocol to use? Let us find out.
OpenVPN is the most popular protocol among VPN apps for Mac. Its main advantage lies in its ability to provide secure connections over open networks such as Wi-Fi hotspots. This makes it ideal for connecting to public places where security is not guaranteed.
L2TP/IPSec is designed for enterprise environments. It provides encrypted communications between internal network devices and remote clients. It allows employees to access corporate resources without fear of data leakage.
IPSec is ideal for accessing websites that require SSL encryption. It works similarly to HTTPS, but unlike HTTP, it does not send information across the Internet unencrypted. Instead, it sends data via encrypted IP packets using asymmetric cryptography.
Atlas VPN – Best Free Mac VPN for Unlimited Speed and Bandwidth
Atlas VPN is one of the most popular VPN apps for macOS. It works flawlessly and provides a great experience overall. But what sets it apart is how many extra features it packs into the app.
AtlasVPN is one of the most popular VPN providers, offering over 750 servers in 37 countries worldwide. And while many people use it because of its affordability, what sets it apart is the great features.
The best part about Atlas VPN is that it works perfectly on iOS and macOS devices. You can connect to multiple devices simultaneously, making it easy to access your favorite streaming apps wherever you go.
You can also download the app directly onto your iPhone or iPad, eliminating the need to install anything else.
Atlas VPN uses the latest OpenVPN technology to ensure superfast connection speeds. You won’t find a faster VPN out there.
Unlike other VPNs, Atlas VPN allows unlimited data transfer across all devices. So whether you want to download a movie or stream music, you won’t run into any bandwidth restrictions.
In addition to being super fast, Atlas VPN also has some great safety features. These include a built-in firewall, DNS leak protection, and a special anti-malware tool called SafeSwap.
SafeBrowse blocks malicious sites, protecting you from phishing scams and malware attacks. Meanwhile, SafeSwap keeps rotating your IP address every few seconds, making it impossible for someone to track your online activities.
This way, you can browse safely without worrying about getting caught up in a government surveillance program.
Atlas VPN is a great choice for those looking for a reliable Mac VPN provider with plenty of features at an incredibly low price.
IPVanish – Best Secure VPN for Mac
IPVanish is a very cheap VPN provider, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s just a basic VPN. IPVanish is a pretty decent VPN, especially for those on tight budgets.
IPVanish uses the OpenVPN protocol, which is considered among the best protocols out there. If you want something simple and reliable, OpenVPN is the way to go.
The service supports OpenVPN 2.0, PPTP, L2TP, SSTP, IKEv1 / IPSec, and Microsoft Point-to-Point Encryption protocols.
This VPN doesn’t support P2P file sharing, which can be a problem if you are looking for a VPN that supports BitTorrent. However, IPVanish does offer unlimited bandwidth, so you won’t have to worry about running out of data.
IPVanish offers over 2,000 servers in 50+ locations worldwide and is known for being among the fastest VPNs on the market. Their network is divided into the US, UK, and EU.
Each region has unique features, such as DNS leak protection, dedicated apps for iOS and Android, and a kill switch.
One of the most interesting things about IPVanish is handling file sharing. While many VPN services block BitTorrent traffic, IPVanish supports it.
You can even upload files directly to their server and download them later. If you want to use IPVanish for something like BitTorrent, you’ll need to pay extra for a premium subscription.
As mentioned earlier, IPVanish allows you to upload files to the cloud and even encrypt them. So if you’d like to keep your sensitive information safe, this could be a good option.
They offer a free version of their app, but unfortunately, it’s limited to 2GB of data usage per month.
To sum up, IPVanish is a great choice for anyone looking for a VPN that won’t break the bank.
Private Internet Access – Best VPN for macOS for Maximum Servers
Private Internet Access (PIA), one of the most popular VPN apps for macOS, is a great choice for those seeking a high level of privacy online.
With over 30,000 servers in over 70 countries, PIA boasts some of the fastest speeds in the industry. Although it offers paid plans, you can use the free version without worrying about speed limitations or bandwidth caps.
The main feature of PIA is its free software — no subscription fees, ads, and gimmicks. You can download the latest version directly from the developer’s site and install it simultaneously on up to five devices. You’ll need to upgrade to a premium plan if you want more than five simultaneous connections.
Another unique aspect of PIA is that the entire application is open source. Anyone can view the code and see exactly how the app works under the hood. There are no hidden settings or features that require a login or password.
All server locations are listed publicly on the website, along with information about each location, including the type of connection offered, IP address range, and whether IPv6 support is enabled.
If you run into problems while using the app, there’s a forum where you can post questions and troubleshoot common issues. And if you find a bug or vulnerability in the code, you can submit a pull request to help improve the product.
PrivateVPN – Best VPN for macOS with WireGuard Protocol
PrivateVPN is one of the most popular VPN providers, especially for those who use macOS computers. So it didn’t come as a surprise that PrivateVPN offered a dedicated macOS client.
Its macOS client supports P2P connections and allows port forwarding. The provider offers five VPN protocols: OpenVPN, IPsec, L2TP/IPSec, Socks5, and WireGuard.
We chose the latter because it provides better security options. We also wanted to ensure that the app works well with the latest version of macOS, Mojave 10.14.1.
PrivateVPN supports all major streaming platforms, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Now, etc. It even allows you to access the US Netflix library outside the United States.
But what makes PrivateVPN stand apart from the rest? Let’s find out.
The app itself is very easy to use. Once installed, you just have to choose your preferred server location, connect, and enjoy watching movies and TV shows. There are no extra steps required. You’ll see the “Connected!” notification on the status bar as soon as you’re online.
Three ways to connect to the PrivateVPN servers are via Wi-Fi, 3G/4G, or Ethernet cable. We found the latter option to be the fastest. Connecting via Wi-Fi took around 5 minutes, while connecting via 3G/4G took around 10 minutes.
Once connected, you can select either AES 256-bit or OpenVPN protocol. Both options offer excellent security standards and allow you to unblock almost every site and service.
You can set your preferred server location manually or let PrivateVPN do it automatically. Even though the automatic mode is faster, we recommend choosing a specific city because it gives you better control over the connection quality.
For those who want to watch movies and TV shows offline, PrivateVPN provides P2P support. Just download a torrent file, open it, and start downloading. While doing that, you’ll notice that the app blocks all incoming connections except those from the VPN server.
If you’d like to know how much data you’ve used, PrivateVPN keeps track of everything. All usage information is stored locally on your device and never sent anywhere else.
If something goes wrong, PrivateVPN provides 24/7 live chat support. You can contact them via email, too. Furthermore, they offer refunds within 30 days of purchase.
ProtonVPN – Best Mac VPN for Speed
ProtonVPN is one of the best VPN apps for macOS. It won our Best Overall VPN award for 2018. And now you can use it on macOS too.
The app works just like it does on Android and Windows 10, except there are fewer features. You still get access to servers across the globe, unlimited bandwidth, and a kill switch. But there isn’t much else to see here.
There aren’t any settings, no way to change your username, and no options to connect to different networks. We’re sure many people will love the simplicity of this app, especially those who don’t want to mess around with customizing proxy settings.
But if you want to customize things, you’ll have to go into Settings and manually make changes. For example, you can choose the network you want to connect to and turn off automatic connection attempts. If you want to add a server, you can do that manually. And if you want to enable encryption, you’ll have to do that yourself.
Overall, though, ProtonVPN is easy to set up and use. Once you download the app, you’ll be asked to sign in with your email address and password. Then, you can select a server from the list. Afterward, you’ll be prompted to enter your payment information. You can pay via PayPal, credit card, or Bitcoin.
You can also buy credits directly within the app. Credits give you access to additional servers. They start out at $10 per month, but you can purchase them individually for $1 each.
Once you’re signed in, you’ll notice that the app automatically connects you to the nearest server. This makes sense because most users probably want some sort of global protection. However, if you want to connect to a specific VPN server, you can do so manually.
If you’re looking for something simple, ProtonVPN might be perfect for you. But if you need more control over your security, you may find it lacking.
ZenMate – Best Free Mac VPN for Unlimited Bandwidth
ZenMate is one of the cheapest VPNs for mac. You can try it for free for seven days before you decide whether it’s worth paying for.
If you do pay for it, there are no limits on how many devices you can connect simultaneously, and you don’t need to buy anything extra to enjoy unlimited data transfers.
The VPN client works well and isn’t too slow. There are some logging issues, though, and the customer support doesn’t seem very responsive.
ZenMate VPN allows you to use BitTorrent, unblock Netflix, and offers a cheap monthly plan. If you want something simple, fast, and reliable, ZenMate might just be what you are looking for. But there are plenty of reasons you shouldn’t buy into the hype.
The average user wouldn’t know whether ZenMate is worth their money. Is it safe enough to download movies and TV shows? Can I stream Netflix without getting blocked? Does it offer good speeds? These questions aren’t answered by simply reading reviews online. You’ll have to try out ZenMate to see how well it works.
In addition to being located in Canada, the United States, Great Britain, and Australia, ZenMate is based in Hong Kong. This makes it a target for censorship by governments across the world.
ZenMate now supports the OpenVPN protocol, which means it will work with servers outside China.
The privacy policy of ZenMate isn’t exactly what we’d call transparent. While some information about how the company handles customer data is disclosed, there’s plenty of room for interpretation.
For example, “We do not retain personal information about our customers” could mean that the company doesn’t collect contact information such as names and email addresses. Or it could mean that the company does collect that information but stores it securely and deletes it upon request.
The site also says, “we use industry-standard encryption protocols to protect your online activity.” But, it doesn’t specify whether those protocols include the Advanced Encryption Standard 256-bit (AES-256-CBC), considered one of the strongest ciphers.
Similarly, while the privacy policy states that “your IP address is hidden behind a proxy server,” it doesn’t say whether or not the proxy server uses 128-bit encryption.
Finally, the privacy policy mentions that ZenMate collects usage statistics, including bandwidth and duration.
However, it doesn’t mention where the data goes once collected. We contacted the company to clarify those points but haven’t heard back.
Hide.me – Best Free Mac VPN for Maximum Location
Hide.Me is a VPN provider based in Malaysia that offers unlimited monthly data usage with no bandwidth caps. It’s great for people constantly traveling abroad or just wanting to avoid being tracked online. But it’s not without flaws.
The app is easy enough to use, although you must download the desktop version. Once you open up Hide.Me, you’ll see a list of connections you’ve already set up. You can add additional connections via the web interface or from within the mobile app.
Once ready to connect, you can choose which connection type you want to use — OpenVPN or WireGuard. Both types work well, although we found that the speed of WireGuard was much faster than OpenVPN.
You can also choose whether or not to encrypt traffic on the network. This isn’t necessary, but it does increase security. We didn’t notice any major differences in performance when choosing to encrypt our traffic versus not.
The biggest drawback to Hide.Me is the fact that there aren’t many server locations around the world. Three countries are listed under “available servers”: the United States, Germany, and Hong Kong. If you live outside those areas, you won’t be able to access the free tier.
We did find some servers in France, Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, and Australia, but most of those were premium plans. Our experience suggests that Hide.Me doesn’t offer a lot of flexibility when it comes to the location selection.
For the price, Hide.Me provides a solid option for anyone looking for a fast, secure VPN provider. However, if you’re hoping to travel frequently, you might want to look into a different solution.
TunnelBear – Best Free Trial Mac VPN
TunnelBear is one of the best free VPN apps out there. They offer unlimited bandwidth and no logging policy. In addition to that, they’re pretty easy to use. Their Mac app has been around since 2013, but they just added a bunch of new features like a dark theme, a way to connect to multiple devices simultaneously, and even a “bear mode.”
The visual interface shows you a small bear next to your location; when you mouse over it, it’ll tunnel to whatever server you choose. If you want to change your server, simply click on the bear again. There are hundreds of locations to pick from, including some great ones in Canada, Australia, Japan, and Switzerland.
You can choose to connect automatically whenever you start a browser or open a file or manually select a connection every time you want to use it.
You can also connect up to three devices at once, and TunnelBear automatically switches between them whenever you switch connections. This makes it easy to keep your browsing secure while you’re away from home.
Besides the Mac app, this exact same fun plays out on iPhone, iPad, Windows, Android, and even mobile web browsers like Safari.
If you go ahead and sign up for TunnelBear, you’ll receive a free $10 credit to try it out.
Windscribe – Best Free Mac VPN for Anonymity
Windscribe — a free VPN app for mac that lets you surf anonymously online — added another perk: unlimited server selection.
The app allows you to choose from over 480 servers in 50+ countries worldwide. This includes servers in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the USA.
Windscribe is only about a dozen VPN providers offering a free tier. This makes it easy to try out the service without spending money upfront. But what sets it apart is its ability to work across multiple platforms.
You can access Windscribe via desktop apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Samsung Internet, and even Amazon Alexa.
And while there are plenty of VPN services cost money, most require subscriptions that run into hundreds of dollars annually.
With Windscribe, there’s no commitment required beyond the initial 30-day trial period. If you don’t like the service, just cancel within that timeframe, and you won’t incur any fees.
There are no ads or annoying popups anywhere on the interface, either. Just one button opens up the list of servers. And that’s it.
The free version works well enough for basic browsing needs. It doesn’t allow for torrenting or P2P file sharing, nor does it include dedicated IP addresses or server switching.
However, it does support up to five simultaneous connections, which isn’t much less than many paid plans.
Premium accounts come with additional perks, including unlimited bandwidth, a kill switch, DNS leak protection, ad blocking, proxy servers, and paying monthly instead of yearly.
There are several tiers, each with varying levels of features. For example, the $10/month package includes 50GB of data transfer per month, whereas the $25/month plan allows for 200GB.

Why Should Mac Owners Use VPNs?
There are plenty of reasons to use a VPN, regardless of what kind of device you own. But if you’re a Mac user, there are some especially good reasons to use a VPN.
Here’s a look at some of the best reasons to use a VPN on your Mac.
1. Keep your browsing data private
When you use a VPN, your browsing data is encrypted and routed through a secure server. That means your ISP (or anyone else snooping on your connection) can’t see what you’re doing online. That’s great for privacy, and it also means your ISP can’t throttle your connection based on your activity.
2. Access blocked content
One of the most common reasons to use a VPN is to access content blocked in your country. Whether it’s due to government censorship or geo-restrictions, a VPN can help you get around these restrictions.
3. Protect yourself on public Wi-Fi
A VPN can help keep your connection secure if you use public Wi-Fi. Without a VPN, it’s relatively easy for someone on the same network to snoop on your traffic. But if you’re using a VPN, your traffic is encrypted, making it much more difficult for someone to intercept.
4. Bypass VPN blocks
Networks block some VPNs, usually because the VPN is seen as a security risk. But if you use a VPN that supports multiple protocols, you can often bypass these blocks.
5. Get around price discrimination
Websites sometimes use your location to charge you different prices for goods and services. But if you use a VPN, you can trick websites into thinking you’re in a different location, which can help you get a better deal.
6. Improve your gaming experience
If you’re a gamer, you can use a VPN to improve your experience in two ways. First, you can use a VPN to get around IP bans. And second, you can use a VPN to reduce lag and improve your connection speed.
7. Use P2P applications
If you use P2P applications, a VPN can help you stay anonymous and avoid getting caught. That’s because your traffic is encrypted and routed through a secure server, making it much more difficult for someone to track you down.
8. Protect your Mac from malware
If you download files from the internet, there’s always a risk of malware. But if you use a VPN, your connection is encrypted, making it much more difficult for malware to infect your Mac.
9. Access region-locked content
When you connect to a VPN, you can choose which country you want to appear in. You can access region-locked content, like Netflix US or BBC iPlayer.
10. Use multiple devices
If you have multiple devices, you can use a VPN on all of them. That includes your Mac, iPhone, iPad, and more. And if you use a VPN service that supports multiple devices, you can often use one account on all your devices.

What are the main differences between a Free and Paid VPN for MAC?
When it comes to VPNs, there are many options to choose from. But which one is the best for your Mac?
If you’re looking for a VPN for your Mac, you might wonder if you should use a free or paid option. There are a few key differences between the two that you should keep in mind.
Free VPNs
There are a few reasons why you might want to choose a free VPN over a paid one.
First, free VPNs are usually ad-supported. This means that you’ll likely see more ads when you’re using the VPN than you would if you were using a paid VPN.
Second, free VPNs often have slower speeds than paid VPNs. This is because they have to share servers with other users.
Third, free VPNs may not offer as many features as paid VPNs. For example, they might not have as many server locations, or they might not offer as many features.
Paid VPNs
There are also a few reasons you might want to choose a paid VPN over a free one.
First, paid VPNs generally have faster speeds than free VPNs. This is because they don’t have to share servers with other users.
Second, paid VPNs usually offer more features than free VPNs. For example, they might have more server locations or offer more features.
Third, paid VPNs don’t usually have ads. This means you won’t have to deal with as many ads when using the VPN.
So, which should you choose?
If you’re looking for a fast, reliable VPN, you should probably choose a paid VPN. However, if you’re just looking for a VPN to use for occasional use, a free VPN might be a better option.
